About the training programme
The habitability of our planet, its diversity of life and humanity itself are threatened by climate change. Developing a global sense of togetherness to overcome such global crises is essential. What connects people can be experienced in a unique way by looking at the earth from space. It shows the earth floating in space as a blue pearl, national borders are not visible. Here, all people, with their cultures and their stories, live on this pale blue dot. Due to the natural fascination that astronomy evokes in children, the STEM ESD programme "The Plae Blue Dot" (BP) was developed at the Faculty of Physics at LMU for children aged 6-10. The aim of the programme is to awaken children's scientific thinking as well as their global sense of belonging.
The three modules of the programme (1) Our marvellous blue planet Earth, (2) The earth and its origins and (3) Climate change and climate protection, embedded in three dimensions of global learning - cognitive, social-emotional and behavioural - enable children to understand the major global challenges and apply their knowledge and skills to make the world a better and more sustainable place for all. In this way, the children progress from knowledge about our planet to sustainable action. Finally, the view of "the pale blue dot" is broadened by a theological perspective on creation, which enables pupils to understand the earth as a common home (LS 3) in which all people have the same dignity.
