Pale Blue Dot
UNESCO's three dimensions of learning for global citizenship education
The Pale Blue Dot Programme combines STEM subjects (maths, computer science, nature and technology) with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and is closely aligned with UNESCO's educational approach to Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The three learning dimensions - cognitive, social-emotional and behavioural - form the basis of the programme and are to be taught in equal measure. The programme also addresses a number of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include gender equality, climate action and peace, justice and strong institutions.
To encourage children to take an active role in learning, the programme uses various participatory activities. As a result, the teacher is no longer the only provider of content, but the children themselves contribute to the acquisition of new knowledge.
